Are you feeling overwhelmed by stress, and do you need some support? Is stress making it difficult for you to concentrate?
L-theanine is an amino acid used to promote a calm state of alertness in those who are suffering from the negative effects of stress. L-theanine is not stimulating, yet may help encourage focus, making it an excellent stress support for people who need to ‘get on with their lives’.
Stress is a normal response, and the stress hormone cortisol is essential for our survival as humans. However, chronic or prolonged stressors, outside of normal day-to-day life, can cause havoc on health and may leave you feeling mentally and physically drained.
L-theanine has been studied for its ability to influence the body's response to stress. A systematic review of human randomised controlled trials found that doses of around 200–400 mg per day may help reduce stress and anxiety-like symptoms, particularly in people exposed to stressful conditions.¹
A great characteristic of L-theanine is that it does not cause drowsiness. This makes it perfect for supporting you in stressful situations where you need to stay alert, such as a job interview, an exam, or other situations where you need to effectively use your brain.
Research suggests L-theanine can influence brain activity and increase alpha-wave activity, which creates the feeling of being calmly focused.²
L-theanine may have a role here too. A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis analysed 31 randomised controlled trials involving 1,168 people. The researchers found a robust short-term improvement in attention, with a single 200 mg dose taken 30–60 minutes before cognitive testing improving choice reaction time in healthy adults.³
L-theanine isn't a sleeping pill, but research suggests it may be useful for people whose sleep is affected by stress or an overactive mind.
In a randomised, placebo-controlled trial, adults taking 200 mg of L-theanine daily for four weeks experienced improvements in several measures of sleep quality, including sleep latency and sleep disturbance.
The potential benefit may therefore be less about directly making you sleepy and more about helping create the relaxed mental state needed for good-quality sleep.
If your problem is lying in bed with your mind still working through tomorrow's to-do list, this is where L-theanine may be particularly interesting.⁴
Research looking into concentration found an increase in attention, reaction time and executive function.
In the four-week randomised controlled trial mentioned above, L-theanine supplementation was associated with improvements in verbal fluency and executive function compared with placebo.⁵
The ability to concentrate, sleep and perform is related to our emotions. Balancing emotions can greatly enhance sleep and concentration.
The 2026 meta-analysis found a potential improvement in depressive symptoms following a single dose in healthy participants.⁶
L-theanine is an amino acid naturally found in tea. It is not a pharmaceutical and has a gentle effect on the body. Tea has been used therapeutically for centuries. However, due to the varying levels of L-theanine in tea, a supplement with a guaranteed level may be more therapeutic.⁷
L-theanine crosses the blood-brain barrier and enters the brain. It influences a few neurotransmitters involved in brain function and has a positive effect on alpha brain waves helping you to feel alert and calm.⁸
Research suggests that for maximum benefit, doses between 200mg - 400mg per day is most effective.⁹
