How our Saffron Safr'Inside™ works

Saffron Safr'Inside™ is a patented extract of saffron that contains a guaranteed level of safranal, one of the main active components of saffron extract. Saffron enhances the level of serotonin in the brain that helps reduce low moods and anxiety, and it promotes a reduction in stress, and improves sleep quality. Lemon balm supports GABA synthesis and utilisation, supporting mood and a reduction in stress and anxiety.

How it works?

Saffron Safr'Inside™ is proven to increase the availability of serotonin in the brain, which is involved in regulating anxiety, stabilising mood, processing fear, and the sleep-wake cycle. Safranal, an active compound in saffron, and the carotenoid and polyphenol properties of saffron, help reduce feelings of tension and restlessness, provide support for the body at times of anxiety and depression, and support dopamine for motivation and emotional wellbeing.

Safranal, an active compound in saffron, interacts with GABA, the brain’s main inhibitory neurotransmitter, helping reduce feelings of tension and restlessness, and supporting sleep quality. Saffron also has carotenoid and polyphenol compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which can help at times of anxiety, depression, and impaired neurotransmitter function. These saffron compounds also support dopamine, which is important for motivation, reward processing, and emotional wellbeing.

Improves serotonin

Saffron increases the availability of serotonin in the brain, a key hormone involved in regulating anxiety, mood stability, processing fear, and the sleep-wake cycle. Saffron works in a similar way to antidepressant medications by slowing down the degradation of serotonin. 1

Promotes relaxation and reduces feelings of tension

Safranal, the active compound in saffron, interacts with the GABA system. GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is the brain’s main inhibitory neurotransmitter and reduces hyperarousal of the nervous system, promotes relaxation, decreases feelings of tension and restlessness, and supports sleep quality.2

Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds

Saffron contains carotenoid compounds (crocin derivatives) and polyphenols which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may help regulate the biological stress response.3

Supports the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis

The HPA axis controls the body’s response to stress, and activation of the HPA axis can contribute to raised cortisol, disrupted sleep and feelings of being on edge. Saffron helps modulate the stress response and supports a balanced cortisol response.4

Influences dopamine and glutamate pathways

Saffron’s crocin compounds impact dopamine, an important hormone for feelings of motivation, reward, and emotional wellbeing. Glutamate is the brain’s main excitatory neurotransmitter, and excess glutamate can lead to anxiety. Crocin works on the glutamatergic pathways, helping provide neuroprotective support. 5

Improved sleep through reduced anxiety

Saffron supports sleep quality, duration, and reduces the number of awakenings, reducing stress signaling and improving mood regulation.6

Lemon balm may also support sleep quality and satisfaction by reducing nervous system excitability, promoting relaxation before sleep, and supporting a healthy sleep-wake cycle.7

Gut health and gut-brain axis support

Chronic gut inflammation increases intestinal permeability which allows bacterial products to enter into the blood. This activates inflammation that can influence brain function through the gut-brain axis. Crocin, crocetin and other saffron polyphenols have been shown to reduce inflammation and reduce oxidative stress. Studies suggest saffron may help preserve gut barrier integrity, probiotic colonies and reduce inflammatory signalling between the gut and brain.8

Polyphenols in Lemon balm may also help regulate inflammatory pathways, support intestinal barrier integrity, and healthy gut-brain communication.9
