As summer starts, many people look for ways to help their skin cope with more sun exposure, including products filling up on skincare shelves with 'from within' sun protection claims. Yes, some supplements may support the skin’s natural defences against UV stress, but they work best as part of a sensible suncare routine, not as a replacement for it or a bad sun-skin relationship.
UV exposure affects the skin in many different ways. It can trigger free radicals, increase oxidative stress, and gradually damage collagen, elastin and DNA, participating in early signs of ageing. That is why protecting the skin is about more than avoiding sunburn; it is about reducing the ongoing stress that builds up with repeated exposure.

When your skin is overexposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, the damage is not just happening on the surface. UV light increases the production of free radicals that can damage cell membranes, proteins, and DNA, and it also triggers inflammatory signals that speed up the breakdown of collagen and elastin, the structures that keep skin smooth, firm and resilient. Over time, that is what contributes to sun-triggered ageing, pigmentation changes and less healthy-looking skin.
This is where dietary antioxidants become relevant. They do not block UV rays and they are not a substitute for sunscreen, but they may help the skin neutralise some of the free-radical damage caused by sun exposure. In practical terms, that means they can support the skin’s own defence and repair systems, especially when combined with sensible sun habits.
If there is one supplement most often associated with internal photoprotection, it is astaxanthin. Studies suggest it may reduce UV-induced oxidative damage and, in some trials, increase the minimum erythemal dose (the amount of UV needed to cause redness). That does not mean it prevents sunburn or even protects from skin cancers, but it does suggest the skin may be a little more resilient under UV stress. This is part of why astaxanthin is often described as the most promising 'inside-out' sun support ingredient.

Vitamin C has long been recognised as important for skin health because it is involved in collagen synthesis and acts as an antioxidant against UV-related free radical damage. On its own, oral Vitamin C has not consistently shown strong increases in photoprotection measures, but the story changes when it is paired with Vitamin E. Together, they appear to work synergistically, helping to protect against some forms of UV-induced damage more effectively than either nutrient alone.
Vitamin E is especially interesting because it protects cell membranes from oxidative damage, while Vitamin C helps regenerate oxidised Vitamin E back into its active form. That partnership is one reason these two nutrients are so often discussed together in photoprotection research and are often found in many topical products.
Lycopene, the red carotenoid found in tomatoes, also has a decent evidence base for skin support under UV exposure. Research suggests that tomato-rich or lycopene-rich interventions may reduce UV-induced erythema and improve the skin’s tolerance to sun exposure over time.
This is also a good reminder that food matters. Lycopene is not just about a capsule; it is a good example of how a nutrient-dense diet contributes to skin health from the inside out.
Zinc plays a role in wound healing, tissue repair and normal skin regeneration, which matters after sun exposure when the skin has been stressed and needs to recover. Zinc is therefore more about repair support than UV shielding, but that still makes it relevant in a skin-protective routine.

Polyphenols and other antioxidant-rich plant compounds may help lower oxidative stress, calm inflammatory signalling and support a healthier response to environmental stressors like UV exposure.
EPA and DHA have evidence for reducing UV-induced inflammation and helping the skin’s barrier function. Studies suggest they can raise the erythema threshold, meaning skin may become a little less reactive to UV exposure and they may also reduce some markers of UV-driven immune suppression.

Nicotinamide, an active, water-soluble form of Vitamin B3, supports DNA repair after UV exposure and reduces UV-induced immune suppression. It is already used in topical applications to treat inflammatory skin conditions like acne vulgaris, reduce hyperpigmentation and improve the appearance of ageing skin.
Supplements cannot block UV radiation and replace SPF protection and they cannot undo existing sun damage in any meaningful way. They do not provide a measurable sunscreen factor and cannot replace proper sun hygiene. If a product implies otherwise, that is a red flag.
The smartest way to think about internal photoprotection is 'layered defence.' First it is important to not expose your skin to strong sun rays and protect your skin with skin-friendly, non-toxic SPF. Clothing, hats and shade are the next layer. Supplements can then help the skin’s own antioxidant systems and repair pathways work more efficiently.
